Mark Earls kicks off Herd by musing on the emergence of the 'cellotaph' in British culture. Roadside shrines which have "blossomed and seeded themselves across our land like the vigorous Chines Buddleia, which wriggles into the cracks and forgotten corners of our country."
This one seems to subvert the genre. Is this Scotty's final resting place or just a handy canvas to graf a tribute to him? There's a vague sense of threat in the inscription on a potential gangland coffin. Tempered by the ersatz emotion of the hearts. Is Scotty metaphor, mate or much missed pet? One for Rebus perhaps.
